Thank you to Bully Zero and La La Latte for informative and parent and student Safety Net workshops and delicious coffee! Thanks also to the parents who took time out of their day to come along to further the important conversation about how to keep their families safe online .

Some key messages for both students and families from the workshops included:

  • Reporting bullying and reaching out for support is important
  • Adequate sleep is critical – keep devices out of bedrooms
  • Bystanders are never neutral
  • Cultivating respect
  • Open communication is important

Some resources families may find helpful when considering how to support children and young people to be safe online include:

The eSafety Commissioner – provides advice for parents and carers to help kids stay safe online.

This website also has an option for reporting serious cyber bullying. The commissioner has the power to remove abusive, threatening or illegal content within 20 minutes.

The eSafety Guide provides an app guide and information on how to protect personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Active parental controls are available on online games.

Common Sense Media provides recommendations of age-appropriate media that kids can enjoy and families can feel good about as well as providing reliable, independent data about the impact of media and tech on kids’ physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development .

Bully Zero has a variety of resources for families, including a downloadable Family Tech Agreement (also attached to this post)
